Here I will show the top layer of planking and the planking of the decks
Remember everything you do now can be seen.  Take care and most of all take your time!!

After noting how the first layer laid I have gone this far with the second layer and now I will work from the bottom up as that seemed to work well on the first layer. Note I haven't laid the very top plank as that would protrude above the lime planking and as the walnut is so delicate I will do that last and trim to the correct height prior to fitting the handrails.

Really cracking on now. Try and take the time to ensure that the two sides match up as close as possible to give the hull symmetry. Especially when the planks open out.

Here is the finished planking. A combination of cyanoacrylate and a nice tacky wood glue was used. With the whole planks mostly wood glue was used with maybe some cyano to help the ends grip. With the cuts I mostly stuck one end with Cyano as a foundation then used the wood glue for the rest. I know people do use cyano for the lot but I like a bit of breathing space. A smooth piece of metal - I use the handle of a craft knife - can be very handy to press and smooth any obstinate pieces of plank into place. I also tend to sand a bit while the glue is still tacky as it helps to fill any gaps a bit.

On to the decking. On the advice of Steve Priske I am going to caulk the planking as they would have done in real life. Here you see my practice attempts. Simply a length of carpet thread laid next to a plank and the next plank butted up to it and then sanded.

Preparing the decks for planking involves removing the tops of the frames which I did using a sharp spade ended knife. I managed it without spilling too much blood. Some of the frame ends do come off a LOT easier than others!! As you can see I have made a start planking the forrard deck. When the glue has cured they will be trimmed back to the deck shape.

The decks are now planked and I have started planking the bulwarks with walnut. The deck still wants a bit more sanding but we can now think about starting the fiddly bits. On to the fitments!!
